Most Frequently Reported Accidents in Order of Prevalence
 |
Fence: Occurs when peering over, jumping onto, or
digging under. |
 |
Two dogs at play: Occurs when
lower jaw of one dog becomes caught in the other's collar.
|
 |
Crate: when ID tags become
stuck in bars of crate (statistically same as 2 dogs at play).
|
 |
Branches: happens when collar
becomes tangled in brush/branches when playing outdoors.
|
 |
Heating/Cooling Air Vents:
Occurs when ID tags become affixed to air vent. |
MYTH 1:
Collars are designed to keep pets safe.
TRUTH:
Traditional collars are great for holding ID tags and for training &
restraining pets, but thousands of dogs die each year from being
strangled by them.
MYTH 2: Two dogs playing together is harmless fun.
TRUTH:
Usually, yes, but one of the greatest risks of collar strangulation occurs when
one dog's lower jaw becomes entangled in another's collar during play. The
collar twists and tightens as both dogs panic and frantically try to free
themselves from one another. Even when pet owners are supervising play, they
often aren't able to undo or cut the collar in time to save their companion.
MYTH 3: Crating my dog is a good way to
keep him out of trouble.
TRUTH:
Even a crate isn't an absolute safe harbor for your pet. If your dog wears a
collar in his crate, he's at risk for possible strangulation if the collar or ID
tags become caught in the crate's bars.
MYTH 4: My dog is a rough-and-tumble dog &
nothing gets in his way when he is playing.
TRUTH: While games of fetch and outdoor
activities are normally a good experience, dog collars can get hung up on
branches or shrubs, which can cause serious injury or death.
MYTH 5: My dog has a great safe haven in my
fenced backyard because he can romp and play freely. TRUTH:
Although the backyard provides a great area for exercise and play, hidden
dangers for your dog include shrubs, branches, fence posts and decks. |

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
What dogs are at risk? Any dog
wearing a collar can potentially have a collar become caught. Accidents happen
regardless of size/type of dog, type of traditional collar or amount of
supervision. The majority of collar accidents occur in the safety of the
backyard or living room. Pups and young dogs are at a higher risk as they often
try initiating play with an older dog which can more easily trigger a collar
accident.
How do I fit the KeepSafe Collar on my dog?
For everyday use, this collar has a side-squeeze snap to take the collar on and
off. As with any collar, dog owners should adjust the KeepSafe collar so that
one or two fingers can fit between the dog's neck and the collar.
Is the KeepSafe Collar designed to be a break-away
collar for dogs that are tied-out? No, the KeepSafe Collar is
not for use in tie-out. When the collar is attached to a leash the break-away
feature is disengaged.
I keep my dog's regular collar loose so he can slip out
of it. Isn't that safe? No. A loose collar is far more likely to get
snagged and twist, creating a life-threatening situation. There is little
opportunity for a dog to slip out of the collar once it has become caught and
twisted. If a dog loses his conventional collar, it is a red flag that he may
not be so lucky next time.
My dog is microchipped and tattooed. Does he need a
collar? Microchipping and tattooing are very important but a
visible collar on a dog is an instant message that a dog belongs somewhere. A
Keepsafe Break-Away Collar with identification is a safer choice than no collar.

 PlaySafe
Daycare Safety Collar
A totally new concept, this collar is designed to provide both the
ability to instantly control and/or restrain your dog, as well as an
emergency safety release. The safety feature is intended for the typical
doggie day care or dog park situation.
Unlike "quick release" buckles which jam with increased tension, Velcro
allows an instant release if dogs become entangled, even if the collar
has twisted tightly around the neck. The collar can open from either
side in an emergency. |
